Hello Pinewood Derby Racers and Scouters,

See below for the rules and schedule.  It is Pinewood Derby season!  The cars kits were already distributed - if you still need one please contact me for a car kit.

Volunteer spots open -- Adults, Den Chiefs and AOL Scouts - This is an all volunteer event and we will need quite a few to make this work. So whether you are skilled at carrying large heavy boxes up and down church stairs (Friday and Saturday evening's transport crews) or good at precision track assembly (set-up team), good with a computer and projector (software race official team) or good with rules and registration (check-in and scale team) or have a critical eye (judging panel) we have a spot for you.  Spots can fill up quickly, so send me an email to express interest and reserve yours early!

Fun with a purpose -- have fun helping your son build their car before the event. Get started soon (or you'll be spending cold weekends in the garage cutting, sanding and painting like we usually do ;> )

WHAT: Pinewood Derby 2017 – Chatham Cub Scout Pack 6
WHERE: Chatham Fish & Game, 41 Fairmount Avenue
WHEN: Saturday, January 21, 2017  (8:30am – 1pm)
The event runs by rank, so please be on time.  You only need to be present for your den's time:
  Tigers 8:30am (races 9-10am)
  Wolves 9:30am (races 10-11am)
  Bears 10:30am (races 11-12pm)
  Webelos/AOL 11:30am (races 12-1pm)

Scouts only need to be present for their den's time.

Rules:
Note: Pre-made/completed cars are forbidden. Please have your scout work on the car as much as possible. You are permitted to add weights to the interior/exterior of the car so long as they are within the weight/dimension rules outlined below.

Scouts will check-in with their Name and Rank and will be given a NUMBERED STICKER for their car. Note: Please do not use the number stickers included with the car or put any other numbers on the car.

The car weight cannot exceed 5.0 ounces. The official race scale is official. Kitchen scales or U.S. Postal Service scales, if you do not have your own, can give a fairly accurate weight of the car.

The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.

The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.

The car must have 1 ¾” clearance between the wheels.

The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body. (Do not add weight to the bottom of the car unless you allow for the clearance of 3/8”.

Avoid building the car too high veritcaly because our track does have a finish line gate which they pass under.

The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped in any way that you want.

Wheels: The wheels may not be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded. You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels, but wheel diameter or width may not be modified.

Lubricants: Only dry lubricants (e.g., graphite dust) that do not foul the track are permitted.

Glue/adhesives: Cars with wet glue/adhesives are not permitted. Please make sure your car is dry by the morning of the race.

Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.

The car must not ride on any type of springs.

The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.

Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, it will be taken from the Scout and placed in a holding area until race time. Only race committee members (i.e., adult leaders) can touch the car after that point.

If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the racer will have 5 minutes to make repairs.

Each scout’s car will participate in eight races (racing once on each track lane), and speed winner will be determined based on cumulative performance.

Awards will be given out at the end of the racing for each rank. There will be awards (medal and trophy) for speed (1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place) as well as for design (1st place 2nd place and 3rd place)

Every participating scout will receive a Pinewood Derby Patch.

Pinewood Derby Car supplies (e.g., weights, stickers, graphite dust, paint) can be purchased at Michael’s or similar craft stores.

This is a signature event for Cub Scouting. Each scout should do their best and have fun!!!
